Wool Scarf bleached out tulips

Story of silk painting, where flowers dissolved during steaming, due to strength of base dye. Shapes were originally tulips, bleached out over Rosemary dyed fine wool, but flower lost shape.  New name DARK GARDEN.  Bundle dyed Ahimsa silk was added as side strips to brighten the scarf.  GALLERY BELOW.

Sequence of painting on fine wool with natural dyes, then change of appearance after steaming.

Phase 1

  • Fine wool dyed in Rosemary - olive green.
  • Stretched on frame to draw tulips and leaves on.
  • Tulips made by lemon bleaching the dyed wool (this may have caused the blurring  and browning after steaming)

After steaming, the shapes were lost of the tulips, flowers became blurred,

Phase 2

  • Ahimsa bundle dyed with Hesperanth and hyacinth plus few Coleus leaves, dyed together with the wool scarf.
  • Ahimsa piece was mirror bundled with the wool scarf, which also took on the blue and purples giving more colour to the dull green.

Phase 3

  • Lino cut prints practiced on the Ahimsa: Celtic Knot in brown, and Dragon Triskel in green;  with thickened dye paste.
  • Steamed result pale, but not too disappointing.
  • Ahimsa was cut in half to fold and use as scarf borders.
  • Main scarf became darker and duller over time. (Interesting if Rosemary does that).

Phase 4

  • 2025 decision to add natural dyed fringe and embroider outlines where flowers are suggested.
  • Result: too much exploratory time to warrant selling as a scarf. Possibly save to add to a future piece of work.
